Since 2003, we’ve been developing science programs and materials for preschool teachers under the Advancing Ohio’s Physical Science Proficiency (Advancing) Program. Funded by the Ohio Board of Regents, the Advancing program’s goal is to help Ohio teachers empower their students to succeed in science. (See Ohio Programs.) An important part of the Advancing program is to help preschool teachers provide developmentally appropriate science experiences that prepare pre-K children for later learning in science.
We provided training sessions for Ohio Head-Start teachers and paraprofessionals to help them teach developmentally appropriate, child-centered, holistic lessons. Special attention is given to teaching process skills that transfer across all content areas. Squishy, Squashy, Sponges, (see Preschool Science Resources below), published by Terrific Science Press and the winner of a 2003 Parent’s Guide Award, is used as a resource for this special programming.
