With funding from the Ohio Board of Regents, we developed a professional development program for teachers that promoted the use of children’s literature as a springboard for teaching elementary and middle-school physical science. Geared toward providing teachers with basic physical science content, the project inspired many teachers to bring literature-based science into their classrooms.
The Science-Literature Integration project produced a diverse collection of classroom activities bridging science instruction with reading, writing, and other curricular areas. One book containing 20 hands-on lessons for elementary grades and numerous online activities were produced as a result of this project. (See Science-Literature Resources below.) In addition, a very popular children’s camp was developed and offered several times.
