Environmental Health

Through funding from the National Institutes of Health, we developed two programs in environmental health science described below. Each program resulted in rich collections of activities that allow teens to explore the decisions they make every day that can help them to thrive or potentially make them sick.

HealthRICH: Health Risks, Information, & Choices
The HealthRICH project helps young teens and their families to understand environmental health science and encourages them to make informed personal choices to reduce environmental health risks. The project developed print materials and web resources for young teen and family programming, held training programs, developed supporting materials, and held informal education events for young teens and their families. The HealthRICH materials are unique and valuable resources that offer interdisciplinary and multi-modal approaches to EHS topics. The materials are thoughtfully designed to appeal strongly to the young teen audience with detective-style scenarios, magazine-style readings, and popular imagery.

Teachers can find additional environmental health information and activities on the HealthRICH website. Students should visit the Thrive website where they can find fun activities, games, and other materials.

Risks & Choices
Risks and Choices was funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and was a joint effort between Miami University’s Center for Chemistry Education and the University of Cincinnati Medical Center’s Institute of Environmental Health.

The Risks and Choices program offered special programming that included content review and laboratory experiences as a means of reinforcing and extending middle and high school teachers’ scientific knowledge base in genetics, toxicology, human health, chemistry, and risk assessment. This training enabled these master teachers to develop instructional materials that provide their students with the experience necessary to make informed personal and social choices regarding the effects of exposure to toxins on human health.
