What Are the OSCI Institutes for Grades 7-10?
The Ohio Science Institutes (OSCI) for grades 7–10 promote increased student achievement in science through a deeper understanding of content, standards-based instruction, and inquiry-oriented teaching, and through ongoing professional development for science teachers.
This extended learning experience includes the following programming:
  • An intensive five-day summer 2005 foundation workshop, one fall 2005 Saturday meeting, and one spring 2006 Saturday meeting

What Do OSCI 7-10 Facilitators Do?
OSCI 7-10 Facilitators will…
  • teach and mentor participants in one or more OSCI 7-10 2005-06 Institutes (See “What Commitment Do OSCI 7-10 Facilitators Make?” below.)
  • be ambassadors of the OSCI 7-10 project
  • mentor and support their teachers as they develop lesson plans to adapt and implement OSCI modules into their curricula
  • support their teacher participants in learning and implementing course materials into their professional agendas
  • evaluate teacher assignments and projects throughout the year providing timely feed back to teacher participants with specific recommendations for improvement;
  • complete individual performance evaluations for each of the teachers in their Institutes to be provided to Miami University faculty as per the schedule to be announced; and
  • develop enhancements to their own science, pedagogical, and leadership knowledge and skills through special facilitator preparation classes and on-going mentoring during the deployment stages of the program.

What Are the Benefits of Being an OSCI 7-10 Facilitator?
Graduate Credit
  • Semester hours of graduate credit in science will be awarded from Miami University at no cost to you for completion of the facilitator preparation and implementation courses. This can be applied to Highly Qualified status, license renewal with approval, or a Master’s degree with approval of your university.
(for Cycle 1, 2005-2006)
  • All facilitators will earn 4 semester hours for completing the 2005 summer preparation course (Successful completion is defined as attendance and active participation in all days of the workshop and completion of all activities, assignments, and projects). Persons successfully completing the facilitator training will be certified by Miami for having done so and their names will be forwarded to ODE.
  • Those who successfully complete one of the facilitator preparation courses (noted above) and who are selected by ODE for a face-to-face facilitator role will also enroll in a variable credit (2-6 credit hours) facilitator leadership course to begin in the summer 2005 and end in May 2006. This course is offered in conjunction with the OSCI 7-10 teacher institutes with two (2) semester hours of graduate credit awarded for each workshop. In addition to the teaching the 7-day teacher institutes, facilitators will be expected to complete all required assignments associated with this effort.
  • Details on cycle 2 (2006-2007) will be provided at a later time.
Stipends
  • Facilitators receive $4,000 per institute taught in cycle 1. You can teach more than one institute in cycle 1.
  • Individuals selected as substitutes will receive a prorated amount, based on the number of days they are called to cover.
Other Benefits
  • Try out rich lessons and assessment strategies to use with your teachers in the teacher institutes and to implement in your own classes.
  • Join an elite community of master science teachers with similar interests and concerns
  • Build strong working relationships with a team of facilitators to present the teacher institutes in a particular region or district. These deployment teams will be mentored by instructional staff.
  • Be rewarded with valuable incentives, including credit, books, and materials.
  • Develop the strength to deliver the outstanding programming that teachers in the institutes will expect and are entitled to.

What Commitment Do OSCI 7-10 Facilitators Make?
  • Participate in 5.5 days of graduate-credit training June 12-17, 2005, and accompanying web components for facilitators that extend throughout spring 2006
  • Actively teach in all aspects of the programming you sign up to do. You will work as a part of a team, with all team members being equally responsible for the delivery of the module. All members of the team are expected to be present at meetings with teachers. We hope to identify a substitute to work as a member of the team who can work if needed due to illness or other necessary emergency absence of a primary team member.
  • Academic-year sessions will be a part of the facilitators’ responsibilities. The institute will involve one Saturday in fall 2005 and one Saturday in spring 2006 (dates TBA).
