Teaching Science and Health through Children’s Literature

Terrific Science Workshops Application COURSE OVER 
  • participants: teachers of grades K–3
  • dates: 9-day workshops plus implementation, reporting, and May 2005 follow-up; choose one of the following sessions:
    • June 14–24, 2004 + May 13–14, 2005 (Closed)
    • July 19–29, 2004 + May 13–14, 2005 (Closed)

Remember the expression “healthy, wealthy, and wise”? You can be all three after completing this workshop: healthy after learning all kinds of new info about environmental health science, wealthy in the amount of time you save in your curriculum when you learn to integrate science with other subject areas, and wise because you’ve learned lots of new content and pedagogy. This workshop will provide hands-on science and health activities that reinforce and enhance language arts instruction while supporting state and national standards. Children’s fiction and informational books because bridges to science learning, serving as effective springboards for teaching science and health and enriching reading, writing, and other curricular areas.

Program Benefits

  • tuition: All tuition and most fees provided
  • credit*: 5 semester hours of credit provided
  • stipend*: $200 stipend to cover out-of-pocket expenses
  • travel minigrant: up to $100 based on distance from Miami University Middletown
  • course materials provided
  • food and housing: lunch provided; limited double-occupancy rooms available for those outside the immediate area
  • partial substitute reimbursement of up to $65 for May 13

* Credit and stipend awarded upon meeting all course requirements, including completing a final project, using course materials with target groups, and reporting results. Graduate credit requires previous completion of a bachelor's degree from an accredited university/college.
